Prologue

Prologue

Breathing heavily, Lucoire put down the unconscious body of one of his team members that he just dragged out of the combat zone. Placing him on a stretcher to be transported into the belly of the space ship, he turned around and looked back at the city. The eternal night sky was lit up by massive fires that broke out as a result of the latest campaign of faction hostilities.

"I know we always disagreed but we did so peacefully for centuries. What happened to make it escalate this much?" he asked himself. But as he spoke those words out loud, a familiar voice responded. "Their arrogance and fear made them snap," she said, her voice full of disgust. Looking for the source of that voice he recognized Schrimpchen, a fellow enlightened agent, her facial expression overflowing with rage. "What happened?" Lucoire asked. "This mess happened," she responded cynically. "Yes, I can see that. But that doesn't help with understanding why..." he tried to calm her down.

"I know, sorry. You've been away for a while, haven't you?" she asked more kindly. He nodded, causing her to sigh and explain, "Three or four months ago, a political campaign started to ban genetic augmentation and declare the human body sacred." - "You call it political campaign, I call it conspiracy," another familiar voice joined the conversation. Fellow enlightened Agent Dieni, a masterful undercover operative and shadow broker, had appeared almost out of thin air. Agent Schrimpchen scoffed but continued, "That resulted in a restructuring of the global government, throwing out all members of parliament that were considered enlightened - including myself. What followed is best described as a witch hunt."

"But not all Res agents are like that, what about xf think tanks like Essex?" Lucoire wondered. "My office was xf. I've tried promoting it all my life, back when I was ambassador in the tibetian conflict in 2183 or as a diplomat and then as a member of global congress. I don't know what changed," she attempted to give an explanation. "I do know but it doesn't matter now," agent Dieni interrupted, "All that matters now is that we leave as the extremists would rather kill you than listen."

Together, they entered the capital vessel and prepared to leave earth and the solar system.

"Say, have you heard anything from Matti, our beloved head scientist? Did she get out?" Lucoire asked. "I don't know, maybe she's dead, maybe she's gone. Something seemed off, as if she simply vanished," Dieni mused.
