Anyone else familiar with the mandalas of esoteric Buddhism?
Anyone else familiar with the mandalas of esoteric Buddhism? When i first heard the words 'mind palace', my thoughts jumped to the cosmic representation of a mandala. On an outer level, they can represent a view of the cosmos and the world, on an inner level, for a practitioner of the meditation system behind the mandala, its a way of hacking the mind. Essentially reprogramming it to make it more useful in the pattern represented by the mandala and all the overt and hidden symbolism within.
Recently we had several Tibetan monks in town making a sand mandala. At the end of its construction, it was ritually destroyed to represent the ever changing nature of things. So a 'mind palace' following this kind of pattern would need to be an evolving, changing, learning and fluid construct to be useful.

Yes. Mandalas, like ingress are ever changing, and as in Ingress, there is no final way to win. Much like life, it is a thing we all come to, but which we cannot win, fix or change. Well, we can change superficial bits. But so far, there is no ginal win. Just what we do today. Like a Tibetan mandala, it, we, all is transitional. We can win the day, not the world. To think otherwise is selfish and arrogant.

ReplyDeleteYes, but it may seem random. And it may be random. Probably, there is a pattern, but if Tibetan buddhism or even eastern buddhism is our guide, we must listen much more than we speak. The glyphs i see speak of we, us, they. I have not seen a glyph for you or I. Wait, maybe you, but in english that doesnt necessarily mean a single entity. In spanish, as an example, tu is a personal you only, usted and ustedes are non-personal and can be plural....
