The Art Of Navarro: Archetypes

As the name of Tycho is being brought up quite often now, i thought it would be a good idea to start talking about something that got my attention before Camp Navarro even begun. In no way am i saying these are Tychos pieces of work, yet. It has been assumed but so far we have no proof, so i will simply be pointing out things ive observed and facts around the release of these pieces. I may do more detailed assessments on each piece at a later date....

Every piece of artwork has at least one meaning that everyone can see, but many that do not get seen at all. As an artist i know from first hand experience that every piece of work i do has a story to it that most will never see or understand but i hope will be noticed. Whether it be the love of the work ive done, the emotions i felt as i did the piece, or just the shear amount of time that was spent on it, i know i hope some one will pay attention to more than just the overall cover of my work and look into the details of it. That they truly appreciate and love the work just as much as i do and not because i want the attention on me, but rather on the feel and complexity of the work itself. An artists work is alive, it is our pride and in it we hide parts of ourselves and secrets that are either ours, or the people we do the work for....

So as an Artist, i pay attention to details.... Maybe more than i should but if you have been around ingress enough and you've followed its artists and their work, you know that every piece has a much deeper meaning than you first think. Passcodes, maps, glyphs.... Ingress is filled with artwork that has stories deep within the pictures. Secrets that are hidden in each stroke of the pen and paint brush, all hoping to be discovered as quickly as possible. So when the pictures to the archetypes first became apparent to the point of contacts, it was hard not to notice things...

On April 25th, the point of contacts were given a picture of their teams Archetypes with the message you and your team are free to use this any way you like. It was exciting, we didn't know exactly what these pictures would be used for but from the moment we received them, something concerned me.....

The first thing ultimately noted by all of the POCs was that each picture had a dark tone to them... When we received the pictures, we only received the greyed out versions of them, not the color. It wasn't the color itself though that made the dark tone, yes it helped, but it was more the expression on each of the peoples faces. All look as if the are on the edge of losing themselves, in my opinion. There's an intense sadness and sense of being lost in each picture, as if each are trapped.... It of course doesn't help that there is a lack of detail on each face, almost as if who they are, doesn't matter.... Interesting enough while the effect of blurring the faces gives the impression they could be anyone, there are details in each that also solidify that they are 13 different people.

I will not go into each picture specifically in this post because that would make this far too long but with each picture there isnt just the difference of sex but of age, clothing style, hair style, and if you really look personality. Yes each person is in a similar state of depression, sadness, etc, but each are in their own sense of this state. Some seem accepting of it in various forms from used to living with it and some even seem to be between understanding it to knowing they cant escape it. Others seem annoyed or trying to ignore it but being unable to and being swept away by it. You can almost connect with these blurred out faces because their reactions to this state seem real. In ways they represent their archetypes by not just how they look but how they are acting within the pictures as well and this is just in the grayed out version of these pictures...

The day before we approached camp, Niantics Patron portal became live with its Archetype artwork displayed in the scanner. At first, the picture was just like the others we had seen... Black and white, with a darker feeling to it but then a colored version showed up underneath and would soon become the main picture for the portal causing the original picture to disappear. As the event went on, more portals became live with their Archetype Artwork displayed on the scanner. Unlike the Patron though, the colored versions of these Artworks were never released in our scanners and would only later be released in the RPG character sheets.

When we finally got to look at the colored versions of these pictures, it did little to sway me away from my original thoughts on the pieces. We were given more details on the pictures, our factions represented in each piece with some being clearer than others. I feel like this was only added though to make it seem like the picture could be more alive... As if it were only an after thought and originally the pictures didn't need to be colored. Their message without color was already clear enough but more needed to be done... The colors are more focusing on the background of the picture and put in obvious places rather than lighting up the actual center pieces and only touching them slightly.

This could be argued as saying it is suppose to represent the neutrality of the people themselves. Telling us that we could be of either faction to be part of these Archetypes and allowing us again to have a sense that we could be the person within the picture. I will not argue that, it works brilliantly in that way and its very possible that it was the true intention but there are many more details in these pictures than just that. The only thing that sways me from believing fully in this opinion is the added detail of the faces and yet another color...

Red... The red automatically makes me think of danger and loss. It, in my opinion, is the only other color that was truly meant to be in these pictures because of how it is placed within the pictures. It is obvious to me that red represents something within not just the storyline (not redfaction sorry) but possibly within the artist itself. If we look at the color on its own and what we use it for in our lives, we use it as a way to say stop, or that something has gone too far. Red causes a reaction that isnt always pleasant. Think on it... When you stumble upon something red out in the world what does it represent? When you read about something red, what is it normally explaining other than red lips and dresses? Blood, sacrifice, anger.... Red is a very intense color and in these pictures it only adds to the dark feeling of them in my opinion....

Stepping away from the colors, even with all of the new details, our subjects still look mostly the same... I would even argue some look more afraid and lost in thought, the emotions are much cleared with the details to the faces. The only one i even see possibly show any amusement in the pictures is the Trickster with the very slightest uplift of her lips that could be argued as just Artist mistake... The rest just seem to solidify the original thoughts on the pieces, but with the added details we lose part of the neutrality and sense that it could represent any agent... The characters now have much clearer faces and have become a singular person in my opinion and not some one that could represent us all. Maybe this was the intention for the RPG though, and thus the reason these were released during the rpg....

I can only type my observations and opinions on these and in no way do i want them to represent exactly how people should look at them. As an artist though.. I could not bring myself to draw something so dark without being in darkness myself or being asked to draw some one elses darkness. Drawing people lost is hard to do without actually feeling it and in order to feel it, an artist has to put themselves in that position of remembering those feelings or actually living them. Quite possibly being among the people feeling these things... Maybe within the Magnus... Either way you have to put a very vulnerable part of yourself or some one else within the picture to fully achieve this sense of feeling...

There are 13 pictures like this, and i can not imagine what the artist went through to be able to do all of these pieces but i can say it would have been a task for me to do it... So i have to wonder how the artist is after drawing and painting these.... Are they asking for help? Are they showing us what is to come? Or is this a reality they want us to see? It seems like the only way they can tell us, is through this work....

I would love to hear others opinions on these pieces. I am stopping here even though i want to continue because i dont want to bore or discourage people from their own thoughts. If i get the time i want to talk more thoroughly about these artworks because there is so much they can represent just like glyph sequences. Even i question myself on what the true meaning of these could be other than representing the Archetypes... I reread my work and i want to change so much and argue it myself but if i kept doing that, this would never be published. My opinions on this are incredibly fluid, so please, discuss with me the possibilities of these pictures and help me form a better understanding. Thank you Agents! I look forward to what we can discover.
