Enlightenment is when a wave realizes it is the ocean. - Thich Nhat Hanh

Enlightenment is when a wave realizes it is the ocean. - Thich Nhat Hanh

The statement first from Roland Jarvis and then later adopted by the Acolyte, “You see the waves, and I see the water.” The famous metaphor used by them to describe the ultimate, the relationship of the ultimate with agents, and the interactions of the ultimate, agents and time itself.

Though the full quote is: “Enlightenment, for a wave in the ocean, is the moment the wave realizes it is water. When we realize we are not separate, but a part of the huge ocean of everything, we become enlightened. We realize this through practice, and we remain awake and aware of this through more practice.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

Does this mean that I am extolling the virtues of a hippy lifestyle and that enlightenment is the true path? Not at all…

That agents are all part of a large Ingress family, is a reflection of one of the aspects of these two quotes, from Thich Nhat Hanh, “...for a wave in the ocean, is the moment the wave realizes it is water…”, while from the Acolyte’s quote, “...I see the water.” For me, these are reflections of the enlightened faction. The theme that we’re all part of something bigger, that we’re all evolving together on this (oft bullocks) journey forward.

What of the Resistance? Well, both quotes also cover this faction, from Thich Nhat Hanh, “... We realize this through practice, and we remain awake and aware of this through more practice.” The key term from this quote being practice which could just as easily be replaced with struggle, or even better, Resistance itself, “...We realize this through [resistance], and we remain awake and aware of this through more [resistance].”

No, what I’m trying to put forth here is that both are part of the same multiverse… Both factions are part of the same conflict and feed off of each other!
The Enlightened need the Resistance, and the Resistance need the Enlightened.

Thanks to my friend Achim S. for sharing with me the original quote.

To leave you with the full, quote as it pertains to us...
*“Enlightenment, for a wave in the ocean, is the moment the wave realizes it is water. When we realize we are not separate, but a part of the huge ocean of everything, we become enlightened. We realize this through [Resistance], and we remain awake and aware of this through more [Resistance].”* - Thich Nhat Hanh
