What is the more imminent threat:
- That a robot army will rise up to destroy us?
- That we rely upon AI so thoroughly that we can no longer function as individuals without it?

By default, the first... The second is not a 'threat' at all, but better seen as a vulnerability that a future threat may seek to exploit.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Unless we remove ourselves from the creation of new tech, a robot army is unlikely to arise. But speaking as a geek whose internet access has been heavily curtailed and even basic laptop use is minimalized, there is a marked effect. As tech evolves, our dependency on it subtly but measurably increases.
ReplyDeleteAren Yashar But you seem to be demonstrating the reverse: the threat is whatever is preventing your access to the technology, not the technology itself.
ReplyDeleteI do not fear artificial intelligence, only the men that make them. If morals are not part of their code, therein lies the danger. If they can think and make decisions on a moral basis there is nothing to fear. Also, as long as we make some things have to have human interaction, such,as deploying bombs, then we will be protected as well. It all comes down to the men making the machines, as it always has.
ReplyDeleteHence my comment about "unless humanity is removed from the act of creation". That leaves only the threat of becoming too reliant on AI and losing our ability to be independant. Which is something to give one pause. Try going without (pre AI) tech for a time and see how you fare. Then realize how much AI will improve how tech operates and extrapolate how we will fare without AI once AI is a common part of our society.
ReplyDeleteIt brings to mind the fate of the Spacers in the works of Asimov.
