Theories on the current Global XM Drought
Not long after the Obsidian anomaly came to a close agents began reporting an absence of XM clouds at portals. Since the Acolyte had possession of the arrowheads from Harlan's Box and the Enlightened faction controlled the anomaly's frequency affinity most theorists attribute the XMWeather phenomenon to her activating the Obsidian Shield. I'd like to propose we consider possible mechanisms for the change.
As a default position I'll state one simple theory. The Acolyte wanted to shut out N'Zeer influence and used the shield to do so.from that one might assume the XM clouds were created by the N'Zeer and they can no longer do so.
Another possibility would be that the clouds were created by shapers to dampen N'Zeer transmissions at portals and those jamming signals are no longer necessary, freeing up the shapers to focus on some other goal.
It could also be that the XM clouds were a byproduct of friction between competing Shaper and N'Zeer signals. A clean signal would not produce that waste heat.
Finally, it's possible that the shield is absorbing the excess directly by tapping into the XM substrate to power itself.
Any other likely explanation I'm missing? Any thoughts on which of these is more likely and why?

IQTech Research has been monitoring the anomaly most publicly. Can they provide any further information?
ReplyDeleteHank Johnson, Edgar Allan Wright, and Stein Lightman were all researching the shield. Did anything turn up that might help us understand where we are now?
ReplyDeleteI'm leaning towards explanation four. The question then becomes if this energy drain from the shield is permanent or a startup cost.
ReplyDeleteWhat about postulating the shapers are now able to pull xm through the network to make themselves more powerful? Or for whatever other means. Shields are not always for defence.

ReplyDeleteGood point, William TNSheep, I was relying too much on the semiotics of naming and neglected the possibility that the shield could be creating an active draw instead of simply blocking an inbound stream.
ReplyDeleteJosé Antonio Rey It can block both the Shapers or the N'zeer. Because of the ENL victory, the Acolyte is going to block the N'zeer with it.
ReplyDeleteThere is a reason that no one had tried to assemble and use the Shield in 2000 years. Maybe this is that reason?
ReplyDeleteIf it was activated by the Acolyte to shut out the N'Zeer and this is the result then what does that tell us about blooms at resonated portals (resonated to either scanner frequency mind you)? Was the N'Zeer signal more influential than we had been led to believe or might the Acolyte have been mistaken in believing the shield could be erected as a semi-permeable membrane allowing selected signals through? Was the shield originally built with the same atavistic motives that prompted Devra Bogdanovich to create her "vaccine" and portal virus?

Could the virus have been a test of this?
If Jahan was influencing her the Bogdanovirus could have been an attempt to recreate this effect before realizing that the Harlan Box might be found and used to activate the Vesuvian Magnus' shield.

ReplyDeleteLess spillage could mean less portal decay. I doubt that we will see that. I find it most plausible that the shield is accessing XM through the portals to power itself.

ReplyDeleteIt was never clear what form civilization's collapse would take, or the time table it would arrive on once the sequence was released. Was this fate what Carrie Campbell was trying to protect us from?
Perhaps we're just now getting to "Clear All". Next is "Begin Journey"... It's time to move.
Paul Gettle But didn't Carrie Campbell sacrifice herself to stop such a thing? If she did and your idea is spot-on, how is the sequence still happening?

ReplyDeleteRyan Schoon oh - interesting. Some magma comes from the asthenosphere, which has a circulation and flow. If the XM is potentially being diverted, then it could be not gone or used, but "stored somewhere. And if it is building up potential energy, that can be converted to kinetic energy and, hmmmmm if someone starts punching holes in the shield, are you going to see "plumes" develop?
