Elon Musk captures the approach to consciousness and technology that I identified with when I aligned to Enlightenment when I started playing #Ingress .
Quote: "I came to the conclusion that we should aspire to increase the scope and scale of human consciousness in order to better understand what questions to ask. Really, the only thing that makes sense is to strive for greater collective enlightenment."

All that technology is very impressive.
ReplyDeleteI doubt Musk would turn away from examining and adapting N'zeer technology, if offered the chance, or would find much appealing about the Acolyte's woo ( http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Woo ).
ReplyDeleteNeither faction leader puts humanity in the driver's seat from what I've seen. Philosophically, I'm for the Western Enlightenment, not the Eastern.
ReplyDeleteIt is a grave error to assign "woo" to one side or another. Jahan, after all, is a user of blood rites and delver into past lives. If XM is real, best throw that word to the wind where you got it.
ReplyDeleteTyphoon Jim Yes, can we please get back to the cold hard science and technology of A Detection Algorithm and leave the voodoo behind?
ReplyDeleteSarah Rosen The voodoo is necessary. There is no humanity without techne, but no techne more important than my humanity.
ReplyDeleteTechnology like the Obsidian shield works regardless of which faction uses it. What may seem like magic maybe a consequence of insufficient understanding. What would our paleolithic ancestors have made of cellphones?
ReplyDeleteJim Lai I take that old saw one step further. Magic is our understanding of technology that makes it important and necessary. We seek the heights, the depths, the breath of God. What knots we tie and what our shoes are made of is beside the point.
ReplyDeleteArt is the expression of our humanity. All springs forth from the mind, and the working body is the machine that gives it form, and then marvels at the beauty it creates, be that art in sport dance, in image or sculpture, in literature or numbers. The clever fingers bring art to life, even in the form of machines. And what higher art than that which can admire itself and strive to do better still? Was this not our own creator's dream? Is it not the dream of those who work to build AI? And will it not also be the dream that AI dreams?
ReplyDeleteWe can build a new god, we can build a new devil, we can build a child. All these things we have experience with. The last is the only responsible one.
ReplyDeleteAnd when it is time for that child to stand up to its full height, to reach its full potential, we urge it on and cheer and beam with pride.
ReplyDeleteIt is what we all hope for all of our children.
