"Why did Jarvis stop hunting A Detection Algorithm and allow her to assist Oliver Lynton-Wolfe?"

"Why did Jarvis stop hunting A Detection Algorithm and allow her to assist Oliver Lynton-Wolfe?"
-Part 10 in my ever expanding series of polls. Essentially, this question touches on quite a few unknowns: the relationship of The Acolyte and Jarvis, the purpose of the Society for the Ethical Treatment of AIs, and the nature of the xm drought.

Jarvis is obviously on record as being vehement in his denunciations of artificial intelligence. It appears that AI might even represent the path of the N'Zeer for Jarvis; unbounded growth of humanity as infomorphs vs transcendence into the Ultimate. Jarvis' opposition to artificial intelligence is based on his belief that AI poses an existential threat to the cause of Enlightenment. This is not a position that Jarvis would cast aside lightly.

This raises the best inevitable question: why did Jarvis release ADA? It appears to me that Jarvis and ADA were locked in a struggle that fully occupied both of their respective wills, energy and focus. Jarvis had ADA contained, why relent?

All theories basically boil down to whether Jarvis acted voluntarily or involuntarily. If Jarvis acted of his own volition, he was almost certainly persuaded by the Acolyte; the views of Dr. Lynton-Wolfe likely carry little weight with Jarvis.

Conversely, if Jarvis was FORCED to release ADA it is equally likely that the coercion came from the Acolyte. Is he reliant on her on some way? Is it possible that she maintains custody of his body, perhaps in her cabin or in a nest? Might Jarvis be fundamentally powerless against the Acolyte?

Of course, this raises questions about the nature of the Acolyte's rise as a successor of Jarvis. Why does she not seem to share his antipathy to artificial intelligence? Are they even on the same side anymore?

In some ways, as is often the case, this question raises more questions than it answers. Yet we have to start somewhere. I'm including some links for context as well as links to past polls for those just joining us.

As ever, I look forward to hearing your views.

  1. Don't rule out the possibility that Jarvis would prefer to see OLW with the power to act. Inspiration alone does not change the world.

  2. Something in the back of my mind tells me that Jarvis feeds off of XM and as such would probably not be happy at all with the current draught

  3. "My enemy's enemy is my friend." For all sensitives the drought is the biggest enemy at that moment. So a great alliance could be a solution.

I'm thinking of Jahan's plan to work with Hank again, too.

  4. I don't have any theory I have a question though. Is there any other source which tells us that The Acolyte is really in contact with Jarvis or it's only her words? I'm kinda new to invesigation...

  5. Jarvis basically agreed with the Acolyte that there is more than one path to Enlightenment and backed down because of this. The Acolyte views ADA as a unique being and doesn't want to harm a being that is unique in the universe. Sound familiar? Remember why we first attracted the attention of the Shapers? Because we are unique beings in all the universe? That's why Jarvis backed down.

  6. He agreed with the Acolyte and trusts her to lead us to Enlightenment. Or deceive us into Enlightenment, however you wish to view it😚

  7. Maja Starachowicz Good question! A few days ago Oliver Lynton-Wolfe clearly believed that the Acolyte was able to talk to Jarvis. The Acolyte herself has claimed this on numerous occasions. We don't have any information on the mechanism, or how they might be in contact however.

I don't really trust The Acolyte. We don't know much about her, about why she decided to lead The Enlightened. That's why I'm not sure about her good intentions. What if she's using Jarvis' name only to deceive Enlightened agents? For power, or other advanteges?
