so, general question... we know that ADA passed the "turing test", we also have many studies showing how the turing test can actually be gamed by very complex programming and in fact you can write programs to create the allusion of AI for many (the chinese room thought experiment). At what point are we certain that she began acting on her own and has not been following a program and orders by someone else. Are we certain that those orders that she delivered for Jarvis and others and even the Katalena pre Zurich encounters, were not done on the orders of some programming. NOt to call ADA a gun, but how certain are we she is not? How can we prove, beyond doubt, that she is truly a separate entity working on her own and not some other programming? I would like to call for the evidence and proof that ADA is a complete entity. That she is not following someone else's computer orders, that she has a consciousness (or not). http://niantic.schlarp.com/_media/investigation:cha...
I'll comment soon.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that the way Niantic presents the story, the RES are currently against the Shapers, in favor of development of AI (including AI-human hybridization -- cognitive enhancement, or "cyborg" technologies), pursuing use of N'Zeer tech in a way that may release the N'Zeer from some kind of exile that was engineered by the Shapers and their 13-Magnus proxies. The ENL are opposed to development of AI tools, opposed to touching any tech associated with the N'Zeer, in favor of increasing human exposure to Shaper influence through the portal network (because they believe that the Shapers are "our friends", who will help lead us to a greater understanding of and union with The Ultimate).
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I think most agents on both sides are actually Humanist, in the best sense of the word. They believe in self-determination for all people, including the possibility of embracing technology to improve the human condition.
Auros Harman has summarized the situation excellently, and I'm on the other faction. Nicely equitable.
ReplyDeleteAuros Harman Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI've basically seen the Shapers vs N'zeer debate as simply creativity, beauty and emotion(Shapers) vs intelligence and logic, using the power of human knowledge to help change the world(N'zeer.)
What do you think about that?
I more or less agree with that -- that the two sides are presented as emphasizing kind of "right-brain" vs "left-brain" virtues. (Though of course that kind of reductive analysis of what the right and left brain do is pretty misleading.)
ReplyDeleteBut again, the vast majority of agents I meet, from both sides, seem to believe that progress depends on employing and valuing both kinds of thinking. :-)
Have no clue they are what? (I am a RES agent, BTW. And in real life, actually, a serious proponent of cognitive enhancement. I can't wait to have a wearable computer with a trans-cranial interface that can provide heads-up info like labeling faces with their names, doing math for me at the command of a thought, and so on.)
ReplyDeletethis is from the new site - http://investigate.ingress.com/history-of-the-investigation/ "The Niantic Investigation: Three Years in Broad Strokes
ReplyDeleteYear One:
THE NIANTIC CONSPIRACY
Thanks to the information leaked via nianticproject.com, we learned that the NIA was at the heart of a conspiracy to research, exploit and potentially weaponize Exotic Matter. Their experiments went too far, and a destabilized Powercube caused a massive XM event at the CERN lab. Devra Bogdanovich and Roland Jarvis escaped from the lab during the chaos. The event would come to be known as Epiphany Night.
In the lead-up to this event, two camps had emerged: the Resistance, who saw XM as a threat that needed to be stopped from spreading further, and the Enlightened, who saw XM as a gift and an evolutionary stepping stone for mankind. The conflict between these two ideologies contributed to the Niantic Project spinning out of control, ultimately resulting in the death of Roland Jarvis, the shuttering of the Project, and the leak of the Ingress Scanner app to the public.
