Questions on Simulacra/Recursion
Questions on Simulacra/Recursion
So there was a conversation in the Essex hangout about Simulacra and I was curious to ask:
Have we explored why memories are lost in recursion. I mean why do they get cleaned out after the 1331 day cycle. Why can't the body just break down and reform without memory loss? Why is it so important for the memories to disappear?
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this matter. Hank Johnson-you were a simulacrum at one point-I think your observations on this are crucial.
-Mustafa.

And also if i recall correctly didn't ADA find a way to keep the memories and she offers hank to keep his memories in return of the simulacra?
ReplyDeleteJosias Baez Yup, during intertius. Going to comment further soon, gimmie a sec.
ReplyDeleteI think its because the creation of simulacra is a process that was first perfected by the N'zeer. The Shapers, and by extension 13Magnus, have probably attempted to adapt the technology for their own purposes by reverse engineering. As previously noted, the simulacra created by 13Magnus are imperfect. Hank was forced to undergo recursion and lose his memoires.
ReplyDeleteNow with that being said, I have a few theories as to why that is:
• The Shapers, and by extension 13Magnus, were unable to completely reverse engineer the technology used to create simulacra resulting in instability and imperfections involving memory in the simulacra.
• The same as above except the Shapers aren't involved. It's 13Magnus that is reverse engineering the process themselves. Possibly due to the Shapers not wanting humans to have the technology.
• The Shapers, and by extension 13Magnus, have intentionally altered the N'zeer simulacra creation process to include these imperfections to preserve the individual's humanity. The individual is turned into a simulacrum, is able to live as they normally would for 1331 days, then have their memories and neural pathways restored to their previous, pre-simulacra state.
