Good day investigators.

Good day investigators. Due to an increasing amount of requests made to this account about the new medal , a couple of agents crafted this message to be posted, later publicly.
Please let us know if you agree with it or not, and if not what would you change.

We appreciate the interest in the new badge that players are having. But please be aware that it is Edgar Allan Wright  and Verity Seke  who choose those who are worthy to receive one and not the investigators of Essex. So please carry on with your investigation and find the truth behind the Niantic Project.  The rewards will come on their own.

VOTING WILL FINISH IN 24 HOURS

  1. I'd add a line acknowledging that folks may want to mention Investigators that are not well known in the community.

  2. There should be some kind of action to earn this badge and noninvetigators are deprived of it. Not very fair. This badge should be made available like the other special badges like that of niantic investigator badges.

  4. Well, I hope everyone that has contributed in any way so far receive it :)

  5. Agree, Bandwagoning is in effect, just like those Cowboys fans :|

  6. Sowmya somy why? You don't need to collect every single badge that Ingress possesses and this seems more like a badge that is more of an honor for people following the storyline than to show off. In short, don't worry about it. The badge doesn't affect gameplay. ☺

  7. For the record, this is why I called that other post a circlejerk. I don't actually care for--or want--the badge.

The only ones "butthurt" are the ones getting defensive (deleting comments and blocking people) over those who disagree with them.

  8. This badge should be server pushed based on Agent name only.  Per requirements set forth by Dr Wright.  I hope only a few a week acquire it and that badge codes never become public.  This should be held as an honor for those few agents that are truly deserving.  I hope to see it on their scanners and theirs only.  I've have been a "part" of essex before this community was even made.  In fact, I helped start essex with it's logo and all and even I don't feel I deserve this badge, nor will I seek it out.  Think about others before yourself guys.  It's a digital token of honor that needs to be earned.

  9. Douglas Sines agreed.. But there are agents who don't follow the storyline + would love to possess the badge. Moreover this badge is being launched for the third year anniversary of ingress. First year founder, second innovator, third year investigator badge. Which isn't made available for everyone.isn't it a little sad. I mean we were eagerly waiting for the anniversary badge and wen it is announced not all are able to possess it. Kinda sad 😞

    ReplyDelete
  10. Was it officially announced as a 3rd year badge?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sowmya somy but the 3rd anniversary isn't until November 15th. The badge was released on the 2nd anniversary of the NIA website becoming defunct and switching to G+, that is when JoJo Stratton took over duties of the Word of the Day that used to be on the NIA website

  12. Sowmya somy for the record, there are a lot of badges that are equally exclusive... I.e. the various character badges awarded for finding a character at certain anomalies.

  13. Niko M not that I saw in the post about it.
Niantic Project post announcing it: https://plus.google.com/+NianticProject/posts/B26HBqizZGd

  14. Sowmya somy This badge was specifically announced as being for those who contribute to the investigation and exploration of the Niantic Project and its after effects. I think you're missing the reason for it.

  15. Yeah, idk why the idea of it being a 3rd year badge was brought up.   #Confused

  16. Paul Fritschle which, ironically, is the point of this post. :o

  17. Douglas Sines David Timothy Paul Fritschle Niko M  sorry guys my bad.. like at Niko M said it was #confusion.. I think this is one of hose special badges meant for special agents who contributed for the story line, pefectly fine wih me. cheers !! :)

  18. I think a better approach would be to cite Verity’s post and own words, Just a reminder that, “This medal will be deployed by me slowly, a few each week, to those who myself and Dr. Wright agree are truly deserving.”

A larger concern I have is the limiting of constructive conversation which is contrary to what Essex stands for. I suspect, with a great deal of confidence that this post is being made because of the other post asking for “nominations”. I understand the final decision to award the medal will be made by EAW and Verity. That is exactly how Verity described the process.

However, there is nothing wrong with people identifying others who go above and beyond the call with the hopes of having those people’s hard work with the investigation recognized. Far too often, as demonstrated in this thread already, we are quick to publicly criticize but slow to offer public gratitude. To suggest that we should not recognize our own means we cannot be an advocate. In my opinion, the previous post was not an attempt to strong-arm the process or usurp anyone. Quite the contrary. The knee jerk reactions (both public and private) to it without asking the original poster for clarification are disappointing. Could words or a better process been chosen to more accurately and less controversially convey the original intent? Sure. Is the recognition and resulting conversation without merit? Absolutely not. Will it be an input in to Verity and EAW rights decision? No idea. Could the information be used for something else like Essex’s own player recognition? Yes.

  19. Andrew Krug I would disagree that there's "nothing wrong" with identifying others for the sake of a badge.

It leads to even more cliquishness in Essex, something that is already pretty bad to begin with.

For example, some may say I might deserve a badge, but no one would ever nominate me, because I'm unpopular. (Repeat: please don't anyway, because I don't want it, don't deserve it, and think nominations are stupid)

I agree with your other points, though. People are very slow to offer gratitude, and extremely quick to criticize and ostracize. I'm pretty familiar with that latter half =P

The problem is, there shouldn't be a medal or badge required to incentivize that sort of behavior. If it's lacking in Essex, that's a problem that a badge isn't going to solve. I'd argue that what's already happened makes a strong case that Essex recognizing the achievements of its members should be strongly decoupled from this badge, not the other way around.

  20. I'd warn against having medals be awarded by investigators as a popularity contest. It would be quite possible for a few dozen people and correspondingly more accounts to swamp a voting system with a relatively small number of voters, as we've seen in recent events elsewhere.

I'd also warn against simple requirements for achieving the badge, otherwise we'd get a lot of agents "grinding" their way in by making numerous but low quality posts and comments to rack up a total. No one would benefit from Essex being drowned in spam.

  21. As someone who pays mild attention, I'm totally cool with not getting a badge. Others have done far more work. And I'm good with clarifying to those who want to join that, while it is great to be interested in the story line, this does not mean you will get a badge.

  22. Jim Lai which, is precisely what the OP says

  23. Daniel Benton this post is an example of the very cliquishness you are referring to. It never had to be made. But was because of a disagreement. The poll is not necessary and is simply rhetoric. Cite what Verity said and move on. What happens if the majority votes no? It changes nothing and affects nothing.

Help me understand the issue here. People debate the merits of others all the time in this community from fan fiction contributions, to VI, to players no longer in the community, as well as both active and non-active existing members. Why is the line in the sand talking about who deserves recognition for this award?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Andrew Krug I'd disagree that this post is an example of that sort of cliquishness.  This post is in response to it, but not an example of it.

This is especially obvious when you look at the votes.  94% of the people who have voted fundamentally disagree with the premise of the post that this was in response to... Meaning that the people who were in favor of the original post, and those who agreed with its premise, were in the vast (but vocal) minority of the group.

And yet they already had a nice list of people they thought were candidates for the award.  Given how small of a minority the people who think that's a reasonable approach seem to be... do you really think the nominations were really representative of Essex, as a whole, rather than just the group who posted it?

Plus... People did point out what Verity said, on the other post... And their comments were deleted.

That, more than anything else, was why this poll got created; because the sort of communication you're advocating was not possible on the original post, because the author of said post was not open to criticism in any form.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Daniel Benton I think you're reading into the poll responses something that isn't there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Paul Fritschle Possibly.

But at least whoever posted this one isn't censoring responses they don't like, unlike the last post.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Daniel Benton More assumptions on motivations. Honestly, just stop.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nearly everyone commenting on here is making assumptions on motivations. No need to single out Daniel and ask him to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Paul Fritschle No, that one isn't an assumption about motivation, it's a statement of fact.

Several people's comments on that post were deleted, because they questioned whether or not we should be nominating people in the first place.

FFS you're being a perfect example of the sort of bullshit that Essex needs to stop doing.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think the original message and guidelines from Verity are sufficient, but likely need more exposure. You can simply cite those instead of crafting a different message IMO. I for one have always wanted to follow the story more closely but it felt very disconnected from gameplay to really worry about much. I'm glad to have some, though minor or maybe impossible to reach incentive to get involved more.
*Edit: yes, badge whore here hoping I can actually contribute enough to fit said requirements 😛

    ReplyDelete
  31. Daniel Benton You're assuming the reason why they were deleted.

I joined after you left, and so don't know what the chip on your shoulder came from, but it seems to be something you need to move on from.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Paul Fritschle Okay, then offer me a reasonable alternative as to why they were deleted? Otherwise you're just defending someone for the sake of defending them, without having any real reasons for doing so.

Which strikes me as being rather... cliquish, don't you think?

As far as moving on... That's really not for you to say, to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think we should all just let Niantic award the digital badge to whoever they see fit. The people who we all expect will likely all be recognized for their investigative work. JoJo taking up the word of the day and her Devra investigation was a great place to start. We all recognize that she has taken an active and dedicated role in the investigation. Let's just wait a bit and see what happens next before we start calling it a popularity contest.

    ReplyDelete
  34. To be honest, I hate the fact that this has come to this kind of discussion. I'd like to ask everyone to be respectful, whether you agree or disagree with someone else's point of view. We are all humans, and have different points of view. That shouldn't lead to insults.

On the other hand, it's not for us to decide who should or shouldn't get the badge. If I don't get the badge, heck, I don't care. It's EAW/Verity who decide, it's them who should be asking opinions if they want them. Otherwise, they know who participate and who don't.

Badge collectors, you will never be able to get all the badges in your scanner. So please, stop ranting because there's a badge "you can't get". Badges are for those who deserve it.

And I won't say more on the matter. I don't like seeing people going into discussions that lead to something else. Let's keep Essex and the community as a whole as it was - a good place where awesome people can make great things happen. Let's keep rocking the world.

  35. Essexians:

As has become evident to the more perspicacious, Verity and I are slowly releasing the Wright medal based on a complex set of criteria. And, as I am sure you are also aware, certain events have caused us both to spend considerable time avoiding those who would do us harm.

The EAW medal will be awarded to those, both within Essex and without, who have gone above and beyond in helping the Niantic Investigation reach its maximum potential:

By digging tirelessly for the truth...

By working to mentor and educate others seeking to join the Investigation...

By being a bastion of creativity and commitment....

And by working to maintain the positive momentum and sentiment within the Investigative community.

There are many such investigators, and we intend to ensure that, in time, each of them is duly recognized.

The process by which we will determine how this medal is bestowed is complex and does not necessarily imply order of merit. If you do not receive one right away and believe yourself deserving, do not be deterred in your investigation. Your time will come.

Do not tell us who to reward this medal to, or argue about this topic. It is counterproductive and goes against the spirit of the medal and the investigation.

To those who receive this medal, whether you choose to share this information or deem it in your best interests to keep it private, the decision is yours. It is not a coincidence, that the second phrase of the so-called ‘Chinese’ curse is: “May you come to the attention of those in authority.”
