Dr. Devra Bogdanovich, the Guardian of the Underworld
I have made comments to this effect already, but I feel like I should actually make a formal most regarding it.
Following the sharding of Dr. Devra Bogdanovich and her re-emergence during the #Shonin finale, she has become a form of Cerberus. In legend, Cerberus is a multi-headed beast spawned of Echidna, a female human-serpent hybrid, and Typhon, a monster than even the gods feared. While most depictions of Cerberus indicate it has three heads, others range from two to a hundred. Cerberus, however, is always seen as guarding the entrance to the underworld, devouring any living mortal who dares upon it while preventing the dead from escaping.
During the Shonin finale, Devra showed that she now exists within the "limbo" of the portal network, similar to Roland Jarvis prior to the #13MAGNUS finale. She is not dead, but neither is she among the normal living world.
How did she get there? Well, she was sharded during an event initiated by Jahan, a human woman of a duplicitous nature working to release the N'zeer. Who are the N'zeer? A collection of entities [citation needed] that the "Shapers" are said to fear and that 13MAGNUS has sought to hide all evidence of for millennia. So, it Dr. Bogdanovich's current state the product of a "snake of a woman" and "monsters that even 'gods' fear"?
Members of Operation: Essex have also noted that there appears to be at least two different personalities or personas present in the Devra shown in the messages. Additionally, there were originally eight messages which emerged during the Shonin finale: one for the Enlightened [msg-eye], one for the Resistance [msg-key], and six that appear to be parts of a single whole [msg-e, msg-x, msg-o, msg-t, msg-i, and msg-c]. It can be equally valid to say that Devra showed two, three, or eight faces - or even more if you count all of the separate voices of Devra played throughout all eight segments. Can Devra be called a multi-headed XM abomination? Even Devra in the messages said that she'd "become what she feared".
...and before all of this, who was Devra Bogdanovich? She spoke out against the rising exposure of XM on an unsuspecting global population and the serious potential risks of mutation caused by extreme XM/Dark XM exposure. She has long worked for what she felt to be the best chance of protecting humanity from the dangers posed by XM, going so far as to working on an XM inoculation which, while incomplete, had a 20% mortality rate and releasing the portal virus which more than doubled the XM decay rate of resonated portals during start of #Helios . She is also the only sensitive to vanish on February 21 who has re-emerged. Could Devra be making sure that the "dead" stay out of the "living world", and even been violently keeping the living away from the gates to the other side well before her sharding?
One final piece of the puzzle - one which I personally find most troubling - is the "erasure" of msg-eye following the Shonin finale results announcement. If the message to the Enlightened truly was one of this Devra-Cerberus construct's heads, did it get severed as a result of the Resistance's victory over the Enlightened over the course of the Shonin anomalies? If so, will the outcomes of the recently announced anomalies have a similar effect on her idiomorph?

ReplyDeletePeter Bachman True, Jim Lai also proposed wavefunction collapse as a theory for the resolution of the eye/key messages into only the one. Still, how do the "exotic" messages factor in then? States of other quantum numbers?
ReplyDeleteBill Robitske All the Devra variants were produced prior to the anomaly like t-shirts before a bowl game. However, the actual quantum entangled message to recover the shards had already been sent and received, and subsequently verified as accurate via application of the Byzantine generals problem and was not subject to wavefuction collapse. I think you would be more interested in a 6 million year old message hotly debated by learned academics at the turn of the 20th century, namely plate tectonics?
