Start as a beginner (child), have a transformative experience (witness, promotion), enter a position of responsibility / power (merchant, priest) I suppose it could go the other way too, where one in a position of power bears witness to something that makes them feel again as a child / starting over.

    This reminds me of the character for "fortune" which may also be written to mean "medicine" or "misfortune", another homophonic circle - your struggles may lead you to auspicious circumstance, while too much comfort / complacency may result in problems.
