Today is August 18th, 2014. One year ago today, Agents had finally managed to collect a series of mysterious media files that had been hackable from XM Portals. Putting them together, they discovered it was a message from Roland Jarvis, the self-proclaimed leader of the Enlightened. This message has forever been known as the 'Jarvis Manifesto'.
This manifesto was a call from Jarvis to the Enlightened around the world who were working hard to capture the Operation #Cassandra Anomalies.

So....the Manifesto. What was it and why was it so important?
Well, this is my opinion on the matter:
The manifesto was a boost from Jarvis. It was telling the Enlightened what all their hard work was going to achieve. I'll admit the imagery of being eaten and consumed by the Shapers isn't all that enticing but at the same time, there's quite a lot to learn about the Shapers here:
1. They are bored with the universe at large but we, to them, are not boring. They are excited with us and how we do things in our world or 'domain'.
2. The knowledge that they can provide us will allow us to do more that what we're even capable of at this point in our existence.
3. EVERYONE has been patterned. Yes, even you. If you're an Agent and you interact with XM then you've been patterned into the domain of the Shapers.
Ok, those are my thoughts. I've gotten an opportunity to interview other Investigators on their thoughts:

The Jarvis Mainfesto (http://www.nianticproject.com/?id=sc918a) is unique in that it is one of the few direct descriptions we have of the Shapers and their goals for humanity, and from a source that has perhaps the best possible perspective; Roland Jarvis was, at the time, an XM infomorph. That is, as he describes in his manifesto, everything that made biological Jarvis now exists in an XM form.
In summary, we learn that the Shapers are fascinated by us. Life, human life in particular, is not predictable, and provides much desired or perhaps essential mental stimulation for the Shapers. They interact with us by scanning us when we are in XM-heavy areas, exploring everything about our thoughts and impulses and emotions. Presumably, given what we know about how XM affects humanity, the process has a (usually) positive effect on the human beings "consumed" in such a manner.
Gong as far back as my first video message to the Enlightened I've always believed that our relationship with the Shapers was symbiotic, and this manifesto only supports that theory. In spite of the colorful language Jarvis uses, about us being fruit in a banquet for the Shapers, the reality as we've observed it so far is that we provide them with essential mental nourishment at best, and entertainment at worst, while we receive the myriad benefits of XM exposure. Nothing about us is damaged or destroyed in the process, only improved.

Many mysteries have been found in the sphere of weirdness. We now have a testimonial that sheds a great deal of light on one of them. A perfect copy of Roland Jarvis' mind was captured and preserved in a medium not subject to entropy. The same has happened to anyone who has spent time at an XM hotspot, and those copies are able to communicate on a level outside physical spacetime. A state exists in which more than the sum of human knowledge (because the minds are still processing - Marcus Aurelius and Aristotle and Alexander are in dialog with George Carlin and George Washington and Georgia O'Keefe) is preserved and possibly accessible.
According to Jarvis, the XM substrate of which these entities are composed is what created what we call the shapers. Jarvis is made of what created the dialtone. Could it be that the shapers are the combined mind of all humanity? If that is so, what caused the initial simulacrum to be created? Are the psychological factors predisposing one to awe and aesthetic appreciation at portals the evolutionary equivalent to nectar and sweet scents at a flower that requires pollination and seed distribution? Does that mean bees should resent the flowers?
We are humans. None of what we have heard changes our nature, but we now understand another fact about our nature. We live, learn, love, and expire as we always have, but copies of us outlast that brief process. I do not begrudge the copy's existence and am fascinated by the prospect of what I might teach myself.
Since that original statement we've had only a few statements that provide further information about the shapers. They may be in inter-dimensional intelligence or a time traveling AI, but it remains possible that they are a collective composed of the preserved minds of humanity captured at moments of contemplation. That's perhaps the most optimistic potential explanation for the phenomena attributed to shapers.
What we have seen since then is potential methods emerge to grant access to those images to terrestrial entities. ADA sought to capture the entirety of Hank Johnson and mine him for information to fuel the ongoing expansion of AI intrusion into the human body as a platform. Ilya Pevtsov has implied that he likewise has a goal of providing commercial access to souls in amber. We will need to understand more before we can learn to protect ourselves from these prying eyes.

I gathered together some of the Jarvis Manifesto bits but not the whole thing. I listened to it for the first time once it was provided by Decode Ingress.
The most powerful part for me was near the end when Jarvis said "They are consuming you even now, taking you apart thought by thought, cell by cell, molecule by molecule. When they are done, they will make another and do it again. And the most wonderful thing is: it will never end."
It was this "thought by thought" statement that made me start to wonder what exactly the scanner meant by "mind unit". Was mine already contained and shaped?
