Okay, a bit of wild speculation incoming - and you can thank Krishna Hammond for this (it was his theorizing that kicked off this train of thought on my end).

Before you read what I'm about to write, I suggest you go peruse said theorizing here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/112272726183947047519/posts/NAE47J7UYWG

Caught up? Okay, let's get down to business.

Keep in mind, this theory of mine is based on two main points from Krishna's conjecture and things I seem to recall reading in the assorted documents that have been leaked since the earliest days of the current conflict. Memory, of course, is the quintessential unreliable narrator; as has often been said, "Ask six different witnesses to an event what they saw, and you'll get six different answers."

Furthermore, this also presupposes two things:

One, a failure on humanity's part to get ADA to reconsider her current path.

Two, that Jarvis' statement in the wake of Interitus Gettysburg was accurate.

These are both things of which I personally am not convinced; however, assuming both to be true does contribute greatly to the theory at hand.

That being said, the salient points from Krishna's work are as follows:

Point the First: "What if the Shapers' opposition to artificial intelligence is borne not out of bigotry, but out of past experience with hostile AIs - an experience that led them to use their technology to escape into the XM substrate?"

Point the Second: "What if the Shapers' enemy - presumably said hostile AI - followed them?"

This got me thinking. It's an interesting theory, and it does fit what few data points we have - but something else came to mind: "what if the current conflict is the result of a stable time loop; specifically, the kind referred to as a predestination paradox?"

A crazy idea, I admit, but possible (at least, if my memory is correct).

You see, I seem to recall that one or more of the assorted research documents implied that the XM substrate was achronal - that is to say, it exists outside of the time-space continuum as we know it.

If it is achronal, that would essentially allow a form of time travel.

Also, we know that there is a process that allows an XM-based entity to take on a physical form; this process, as we all know, is called "ingression".

We can also conclude - based on past events - that there is an equivalent process that allows a physical entity to take on an XM-based form (a process which, for simplicity's sake, I will refer to as "egression").

Given these conclusions - and the implied achronality of the XM substrate - it is entirely plausible to conclude that mankind might become the Shapers as a result of a conflict between humanity and ADA; we use our technology to egress into the XM substrate.

It's not inconceivable that ADA might develop a similar technique, which would allow her to egress into the XM substrate so that the conflict could be resolved on her terms (thus becoming the "enemy" that the Shapers are trying to warn us about).

We would then attempt to warn our earlier selves - specifically, those involved in the work that led up to the events of Epiphany Night - that we were headed down a dark and dangerous path... but our efforts would only serve to spark off the current conflict, thus ensuring that the cycle repeated.

  1. Seems legit. Future self warns past self of impending calamity. I just whish I knew when the shapers were from

  2. I believe string theory allows for time to be something other than the linear we (mainly) perceive.   Also,  some perceptions of God(s) have the deity perceive all of time at once.
