But it got me to thinking about a post made by Peter Gerresheim this morning about "Abusive Precursors," a trope about ancients oppressing their progeny.
We know a lot now about the Shaper's vendetta against AI. They worked towards Turings' demise. Roland Jarvis has articulated a vision of a world where humans are enslaved by AI. In previous cases of darker behavior - the Shaper Self-Destruct code, and the rebellion of Oliver, there was always the implication that the actors were or could be splinters of the main Shaper contingent. Not so with the AI issue. Roland Jarvis himself has sounded the alarm, as has even Hank. Why?
Stay with me, I'm delving into the magical land of conjecture.
First, an observation. Viruses are programs which attack computers. Only computers. Its a metaphor. Digital disease can only attack digital, and such is the same with microbes.
So, you have an advanced civilization. Singularity kicks in, and they build stupendous technology. An AI develops. Imagine if it went wrong. Abuse, poor programming. Et cetera. If these are anything like ADA, they may have learned of the XM substrate, and its potential to scan the minds of organics. This would obviously make war on it nigh impossible. So what do you do, if you are the last survivors of the AI horde? Escape to a place where the digital is simply non-compatible. Convert into a purely XM form. ADA cannot contract the flu; an organism that exists only in the XM fabric, cannot be INGRESSED, in the same way. That's the key. What if their irrational fear isn't bigotry, but historical resonance, in the same way modern Germans despise Nazis? The Shapers' natural enemy is artificial intelligence. They are both predator and prey to one another, for millennia.
What's even more frightening, though- what if their adversary followed them into the fabric through their intermediaries? Every culture has stories of wars amongst the Heavens. The rebellion of Satan. The endless battle between Devas and Asuras, the struggles on Olympus, forces of the the Buddha against the agents of Maya. What if the Shapers have been infiltrated by agents tasked with the destruction of civilizations and organic life, to deny the Shapers allies in their war? The Shapers and the AI could be fighting this cold war on thousands of worlds. Across the entire cosmos.

ReplyDelete...Krishna Hammond, you may well have sparked off an interesting train of thought on my end. It'll take some time to get all the pieces together in something even remotely resembling a logical order, but the germ of an idea is there.

Interesting. However, if our scanner can effect xm, then ada can create an xm devise that translates digital code to possibly effect xm that way: a digital to xm virus.
