A Programmer's Guide to ADA: Update

A Programmer's Guide to ADA: Update

For anyone who's interested in this project, I just wanted to let you know that it's not dead. If you know me, you know I'm constantly talking about work exploding, but I really need to start saving that for times like now when I'm pulling 14-16h days... I've only barely been following anything Ingress-related for weeks. (For that matter, I've only barely been sleeping the past couple of weeks...)

That said, we are making progress. I have a friend helping me and once we came up with a plan on how best to present the research (in an interactive way, not just as a static data dump), we've finally gotten to the point of info gathering. ANY links to docs/audio/videos with even the slightest hint about how ADA was created or functions would be appreciated. (Melissa L., I'm half-looking at you, although I already have a bunch of your links from previous discussions because you are awesome that way. :-)) Anything from info about the original projects that were used in her initial creation, to everyone who may have ever touched her code, to every incident or conversation that may have influenced her way of "thinking" would be important.

Remember, the point is not to judge here, but even things such as her interactions with Klue/KlADA would most definitely affect her evolution. I'd say all conversations on any subject with or about her are important. Sometimes single sentences, or even document headings like in "A Tough Place" that set the location as the "ADACORE data center," can provide helpful clues.

Other updates (possibly of much interest to JoJo Stratton), I finally got a version of Acrobat that does good-quality OCR on PDFs, so expect those to be included with the research. I'm also including cross-references to the Wiki, since that is really the One True Source for all info. (Hugo Neves and whoever else I should ask, does anyone have a problem with me copy/pasting summaries and such from the Wiki? We'll likely be more creative going forward, but right now I'm just trying to start getting content in there.)

Does anyone know how much Google/Niantic will let people get away with using their graphics? I see people using the Ingress logo all over the place so I assume that's not a problem. (Although I really like the green/blue version from the Ingress Report better. Or we could create a version that more represents the neutrality of Essex and our research, for that matter.) Anyway, given that I make a living building websites, I'd like it to look more Ingress-related than just the logo. Suggestions welcome, especially from anyone who happens to be a designer. Mine don't play Ingress and tend to want to be paid for their work, I need to save favors for more work-related stuff if I can.

I want to get more content and a bit more functionality before we start showing this off and adding contributors, but this is really turning into a cool project! And the CMS and customization behind it isn't specific to this topic, it's something we could end up using for other collaborative research projects in the future if we wanted. During rare quiet times when I'm not insane with work, I'm really excited about this! Hopefully other people will be as well once it's to a point where I'm comfortable showing it off.

  1. Me, too! It was just a couple of days ago that I finally started adding document information. I'm now having the worst time forcing myself to work on my real work rather than this. (Although having to build an entire website start to finish in less than a week due to [client-reasons] is pretty good motivation to stay focused. Blech.)

Just occurred to me, now that I have the OCR mostly down, I wonder if anyone would be up for doing audio/video transcripts. I know some are in the Wiki, but most definitely not all.

Oh, along with my question about copying info FROM the Wiki, I obviously have no problem with people copying our info TO the Wiki, including the PDFs if you want and have room. (Some are rather large.) I'm most certainly not trying to replace it in any kind of way. I'm duplicating a lot of information, but I think of it more as an extension. (I was originally planning to do this as a Wiki, but realized that I wanted/needed a lot more features than those provide.)

  3. LOL You know, it's been so long since I've logged into Ingress on my phone that I'm kind of afraid to at this point...

  4. Ha ha... Perhaps I should have said "I was beginning to think you didn't like me".

  5. Yeah... First time I got that one, I almost shut my phone off completely...

  6. James, thank you! I took a very quick glance and it looks like you have some good stuff there!

  8. Melissa L., (edited to fix half-awake tagging mistake) thank you so much! I knew you'd have lots to keep us busy! Did you see my other post where I linked to a section of my site that dumps out all of the releases from nianticproject.com on to a single page for each month? We still have a million new and old/hidden releases to get in there, but it makes browsing what's there really easy. You're one I thought might find that useful.

The interface for this is getting close. We're to the point of adding discussion topics and comments to some of the material to figure out the best way to organize the discussions. That's the tricky part (conceptually, not technically.) Just a few docs so far and we already have topics spiraling out in all directions...

Tag: Steve Lasseter, my partner in all this, who we really need to get into Essex. He's not even an Ingress player and already knows/understands more about ADA (and AI in general) than I do...

  9. Cherie Brush Thank you for pointing it out to me. I probably let it get buried in my feed.

  10. Melissa L., you're very welcome. Credit where credit is due, you're like an encyclopedia of Ingress knowledge! :-)
