Evaporating XM:

I've always been curious of the XM that appears to evaporate into thin air off of the tops of portals on our scanners.  The XM particles are vanishing, thus appear to be converting into another type of matter (in order to disappear) and going "somewhere".  Where is this XM going?  Is there some huge XM clouds up in the skies above us? If there is, why is it not periodically raining XM down on us (if XM can even do that).

Or, is it just assumed that the disappearing XM is just falling to the ground every 20 minutes and thus gives us the XM on the ground to pick up.  If that were the case, then there should be snowhill-sized XM piles on the ground on portals that aren't visited often.

Apologies if this is explained somewhere else already.  If it has been, I haven't found the reference yet. Maybe I'm just looking too much into this and should just ignore it. But I can't; this is bugging me.

  1. They're fountains. Pierian Springs.

  2. In the original post, a comment said "Decay...", that could be the better explanation. The higher the portal, the more intense is the levitating XM trail, and it makes sense, since L8 Resonators store a lot more energy that L1, and the XM needed to recharge them is a lot more.
The decay happens because maintaining the faction influence on a portal consumes energy from it's resonators. Portals that have "no predetermined influence" consume no energy, simply exist in a pure state, producing small amounts of XM around itself.

  3. It could just be glimpses of the larger XM field viewed through the portal. Once a certain level builds up it spills through the portal and onto the ground

  4. Similarly, a portal is a microwormhole. Yet, while the majority of the matter spiralling into a black hole accumulates along the systems' equatorial plane, some material shoots out perpendicularly in a "jet" of particles. Portals behave much like "white holes", the opposition to black holes theorized by Einstein. These have yet to be observed elsewhere. I believe the pattern works in the inverse as well: matter spirals out periodically along the plane of the earth. But some jets upwards, a radiative XM effect. The may be happening downwards to the center of the earth, too, but we may not be observing it.
