After reviewing the glyphs presented at the culmination of #13Magnus  is San Francisco, I decided to revisit the "Advance" glyph.  Basically a straight line, and without the convenience of being shown with it's calibration grid, this one has been somewhat challenging to transcribe with assured accuracy.

The image on the right (2.) was my original transcription, however I am now leaning more toward the image on the left (1.) as it is straighter without the slight bend that is in the other.  Of course, that may also have to do with the accuracy and symmetry of the calibration grid I am using.  Also keep in mind, that Anthony Castanza has a transcription that cuts out the middle point altogether and shoots the glyph line straight from point a to point b.

Essex agents, what are your opinions on this?  If you need the original glyph image to compare it to, it can be found in this video:  The Glyph Message: #13MAGNUS

Edgar Allan Wright Stein Lightman Any input?

  1. It looks like there might, in fact, be a slight bend in the original image that would align with the middle point in your Image #1 : http://niantic.schlarp.com/_media/investigation:advance_sf.png

My big concern is that the glyph appeared on the right side of the screen as the glyphs were showing. And while some of the glyphs (like breathe) weren't entirely faithful to vertical translation of the grid, all the others were faithful to horizontal translation.

  2. Anthony Castanza You have basically stated my own opinion on this exactly.  #1 does seem more accurate, but the positioning in the original displaying of the glyph is what puts it in question.  Perhaps the "Breathe" glyph you mentioned and to an extent, the "Destiny" glyph presented in that same series may advertise that the original positioning is not as significant as the shape.

Interestingly, if it indeed does bend slightly to the right, that means the calibration grid I used in that glyph creator is off just a bit.  I built that one based on the assumption that the distance from the center to the inner vertices is half that of the distance to the outer.

Just with some quick tweaks, it looks like having the outer radius be 85-90% (rather than 100%) larger than the inner radius seems to make it fit.

I wonder how much that tweaks the rendering of other glyphs.

  4. Daniel Benton There appears to be a bend in Stein Lightman's glyph grid as well although it is to a lesser degree.

  5. Good point Daniel Benton the accuracy of the calibration grid seems to be paramount.  And who's to say the one I have been using is any more accurate than yours? I think I will go back and compare my grid to the one shown in the "Lightman Decipherments" and see if it needs re-calibrating...

  6. Daniel Beaudoin what a great tool!

That begs the question. Are all glyphs continuous lines? Have we ever seen a glyph that includes two or more unconnected segments beyond the calibration grid?

  7. Daniel Beaudoin Well, if there is indeed a slight bend in this one, that would correlate to a 1,7,3 glyph (as opposed to just 1,3 or some other two-point variant), then it implies that my grid is wrong.

I think Hugo Neves  is the one who uploaded that version of the glyph maker I just linked; I'll see if I can get him to tweak it.

Michelle E One, the human/shaper combo glyph, if I recall.

  8. Michelle E, Daniel Benton is right about the human/shaper glyph. With that "contraction" being the only exception, all glyphs are formed by one continuous line. And so far no glyphs have been found comprised of unconnected segments.

  9. Daniel Beaudoin is it still the case that the Resist glyph is still the only one that involves intersecting segments?

  10. Daniel Benton Yes, that one and the scanner avatar glyph that looks very similar to the resist glyph.
