I am almost certainly reading far too much into this... but there is a retrovirus called XMRV (potentially related to leukemia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome) that has the structure pictured below.  The electron microscope images on the lower right also slightly resemble the zygote-like structure that Melissa L. noted the other night.  #Ingress logo for comparison.

    It's a plausible step. From a narrative standpoint, anything that affects anything will end up being used for a purpose. The retrovirus' existence is not in doubt here. I think it's just a matter of when someone decides it has a purpose.
