Based on the latest document where one of Oliver's specialties was Planck-scale engineering, I decided to do some background research on the subject. One of the first articles I came across was this: http://hplusmagazine.com/2013/11/25/femto-engineering-for-dummies/
There were some very interesting things mentioned, here are some quotes:
"Hugo de Garis has talked about attotech and Planck-tech, and the search for Infra-particle intelligence."
Second quote: "Or maybe there are ways to structure plancktech or sub-plancktech into complex dynamic forms outside of exotic matter -- instead, "beneath" ordinary matter."
"Anyway, I've been thinking a bit lately about how the construction of femtostructures might actually happen. So far the best ideas I've come up with seem possible only inside a quark-gluon plasma or maybe a quark star or some other kind of out-there form of strange matter."
Anyway, read the article, there are some striking parallels.
The really good stuff is in the section headed:
"Polymer Chains in Strange Matter"
Then this companion article:
http://hplusmagazine.com/2011/11/25/x-tech-and-the-search-for-infra-particle-intelligence/
"Beyond Femtotech"
Steadily working our way down to XM scale engineering in the real world...
To quote, the three steps for femto-engineering:
1) Make a reasonably stable quark-gluon plasma; or make a quark star, or journey to one. [Maybe a portal?!]
2) Fashion a device capable of reaching into said strange matter and manipulating the "polymer" chains therein. [Done, scanner]
3) Use said device to build tensegrity structures, by winding polymers around each other appropriately, and building structures of of the ensuing multi-polymer strands, in the broad fashion of DNA tensegrity structures [XM Constructs]

So, um, yeah.

Interesting. I'm reading through all the links and supplemental material still, but a thought: degenerate and and strange matter are subject to instability. The author hypothesizes dynamic stabilization- the process of using high frequency vibrational energy to stabilize things like pendulums - to stabilize femtoscale constructs made of such materia. Modulated oscillations at a fixed frequency range- it could be that a XM "resonator", in addition to modulating the XM flow from portals to a give frequency, is itself resonating at a given frequency, and the "level" of the resonator corresponds to the amount of oscillation being used to stabilize it. This in turn maybe why we have yet to see higher frequency resonance- an inability to produce oscillations which stabilize the resonator further.
ReplyDeleteAlso relevant is the phrase Planck scale. For reference, the Planck scale is the 1*10^-36. This is below the femtoscale, (a proton is .84.86 fm) and smaller even than electrons and quarks (although in classical physics electrons are treated as sizeless, which is a whole 'nother bag of worms). The only theorized unit of matter in this scale are the eponymous strings of string theory.(Photons are technically sizeless, although their waveforms are typically within the nanometer scale). If Oliver was studying this, it's likely because he was looking for string level matter manipulation as methodology of refining the femtoscale engineering above. (1/2) (Sorry, on mobile. Busy busy). Also don't ignore the strike through, I don't know how to make it go away.
ReplyDeleteAt the Planck scale, size and distance don't really mean anything anymore. Gravity becomes just as strong as the other fundamental forces. It's so strange and weird that we don't really know what happens because the energy required to probe it would be several times the output of humanity in total. Check the Wikipedia page for the Planck scale, the speculation there is interesting. Particularly the idea of the planck scale being the realm of 3D space where the curled up, higher dimensions "border" ours, and can be investigated. This does conjure the image of Shapers, simultaneously being infinitesimal and existing across all physical points in the universe. This does also suggest that either a) XM leaks from these curled up dimensions, and takes on attributes of size, mass, and traditional force interaction spontaneously or b) takes on these attributes when interacting with strings in specific ways, behaving like miniaturized fermions or photons respectively.
