  1. Thanks to José Antonio Rey doing some quick research, this has been identifed as the author Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheridan_Le_Fanu ), a gothic horror writer of the mid 19th Century. His most known work is "Carmilla", a vampire story.

  2. It's thought that Carmilla was inspired in part by the tale of Countess Bathory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_B%C3%A1thory
the castle where she was sealed in her rooms is a portal: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=48.724736,17.76117&z=17
other portal to check would be the tomb where the Countess was originally laid to rest: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=48.715482,17.786633&z=21
