We are going to lose our memories...

As we have seen a great many times in Ingress lore, especially here at Operation Essex ... As the majority of you have heard, G+'s end date has been drawn closer! The latest posts stating as early as March.

Yes, there is "Google Takeout" that allows things to be exported. But if you've tried that, you know that yes it does the export, but... it doesn't leave things in a very consumable state afterwards.

I am wondering, would the community here want to work together to take each post in this community and save it / print it off to a PDF, that could then be compiled as a digital book? I realize that's not super elegant, and that a lot of the techie minds here probably are brainstorming more creative solutions... but at the end of the day, if "we" don't get going on something, all could be lost...

I can envision a work share where X number of people volunteer to take a two week period and create the PDFs, depositing them in a shared archive...

Now is the time for all great Allies to come to the aid of Edgar Allan Wright

  1. JSON export is a relatively consumable format (with a a little bit of scripting skills you can convert the output to PDF quite easilyish).

But the problem with community export via Google Takeout is that it doesn't export the posts of the community. Takeout only takes the posts that have been created by oneself (privacy reasons, I suppose).

Did you take a look at this: blog.friendsplus.me - Export Google+ feeds to Wordpress or JSON file – Friends+Me

Might be helpful to get the community content exported. The limit of 3000 posts for the free version might be a b*tch, though.

  3. I have much work in my communities. Elegance aside your suggestion is the best. What a better way to preserve Ingress history. What an excellent idea.

  4. Good initiative, Matt Stevenson ! 👊

I spent a few hours trying to come up with a data collection method but I think screenshot and PDF print are the best options.

A shared mind palace to collect it all on (in Drive/Docs) will make our past and present searchable for future reference and publication. 📚⚛️
