Yesterday when talking about what 2.0 may hold in store for us, there were wishes for (Magnus) archetypes to play a bigger role. One idea mentioned was that agents that displayed traits of an archetype may receive slight bonuses ingame. But how do you recognize which agent represents which archetype(s)?
Badges. Badges that correlate with your archetype are those that you pursue even when it has reached onyx level. So - together with other Essexians - I created a List of which Badge and which Magnus archetype may be connected (plus a few comments where a debate occured):
Explorer-Archetype
* Trekker-Badge
* Explorer-Badge
Interpreter-Archetype
* Translator-Badge
Both Lightman and Carrie are known to have a connection with glyphs. But even though it was Lightman that implemented the Badge, it is suspected that he inherited some aspects of Carrie's Interpreter Archetype when she died.
Skeptic-Archetype
* Operation Portal Recon - Badge
Given that the entire OPR-Tool requires a thorough investigation of a portal candidate and even some level of self-doubt, the Skeptic Archetype is the most obvious choice.
Dreamer-Archetype
* Mind Controller-Badge
Alchemist-Archetype
* Engineer-Badge
* Builder-Badge
Catalyst-Archetype
* Hacker-Badge
* Liberator-Badge
Visionary-Archetype
* Illuminator-Badge
* SpecOps-Badge
Given that doing some missions in a specific order results in a bigger picture, the Visionary-Archetype seems like the right choice.
Patron-Archetype
* Recruiter-Badge
* (Mission Day-Badge)
Both badges somewhat represent community. The Mission Day Badge however only represents taking part in such a community event, whereas the Patron-Archetype may more likely be found on the organising side of such event.
Omniscient-Archetype
* Recharger-Badge
Listener-Archetype
* Seer-Badge
Humanist-Archetype
* Pioneer-Badge
* Purifier-Badge
These Badges may to some extend contradict each other but the Humanist connects these aspects. It may be in the Explorer's character to discover new things but it is humanity's very nature to leave a mark. Whether it is planting a cross on the peak of mountains or a flag on the moon, this is humanities attempt to overcome the transience of life by creating something that lasts longer.
The Purifier Badge however represents (re-)creating the neutral state, resetting a portal to a state unassociated with either faction - as humanity in essence is cross-faction.
Trickster-Archetype
* Connector-Badge
* Guardian-Badge
Spiritualist-Archetype
* Sojourner-Badge
Given the stamina, fervor and passion required to keep Ingress in your mind for days, years - potentially even decades - that is something only the serenity of the Spiritualist can explain.
So, do you agree? Do you disagree? Let me (and the rest of us) know! :)

I see several major flaws.
ReplyDelete1. It encourages !RiotGate type of situations.
2. If badges are retired then archetypes will be retired.
3. Level 16 players who are ultra active eventually get all black.
4. Archetypes are more than badges. It is who you are. It's your role in the universe/life. Operators would fit under the definition of Omniscient, Catalyst, Patron, or Visionary if you go by RPE abilities. Some players who are unable to travel the world would still be explorers because they know the ins and outs of their hood and can tell you the best taco cart to visit at noon and the optimal route from anywhere witjin 5 miles.
1) I feel this would encourage inappropriate game play if bonuses were tied to badges.
ReplyDelete2) I don't mind seeing one badge represent an archetype but that being just that a representation. Unless a new badge, that is unique to the arechetype, could be created.
3) I made a suggestion that there could be badges that represent the Magnus group as a whole, for the simple fact some of the skills and abilities mention for some of the badges are also used in other ways by multiple archetypes.
Depands on what the archetype bonuses would be. Why would an Omniscient be interested in Patron-Specific bonuses? What use would Skeptic-Bonuses be for a Spiritualist?
ReplyDeleteBut who's to say ALL badges relate to an archetype? why not one specific badge per archetype and the remaining badges are either for the non-Magnus agents or can be used to benefit the Magnus as a whole (aka community)?
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great idea to me. Games that gave lasting appeal let you personalise your character/profile. These bonuses need not be competitive in nature. If archetypes were to be a thing, it makes sense that you would have an avatar to apply them too. I would love to see an agent avatar you could customise with unlocks based on badge levels, certain badges/tiers obtained etc based on your archetype rank. Even skins for items in game-there is a lot you could do! Ingress would have even more long-term appeal if you could find and customise your gameplay.
ReplyDeleteLong time lurker, first time poster.
ReplyDeleteWith the Seer badge no longer available, how could a newish agent become a Listener archetype? Also with OPR restricted to L12+, lower levels would be unable to attain the Skeptic archetype. In fact, limiting archtype "status" to onyx would prevent many low-level agents from enjoying the possible benefits, so perhaps making it tiered agent-level:badge-level would help keep those agents under L12 motivated. :)
Victoria Anne Well, the Archetype-Bonuses would be a reward for endgame dedication. Imagine it as a way of customisation. I would see it as undesired to grant all bonuses to everyone - because if everyone is special, nobody is.
ReplyDeleteGerald Wolf I see. But what about the Seer badge?
ReplyDeleteVictoria Anne I understand your concern because I have not even the slightest clue of an idea what the "Bonus" for "Listener" could be.
ReplyDeleteWhat if - instead of associating each archetype with an actual badge we just had stat, xp and ap bonuses associated with each archetype and level
ReplyDeleteChiplander Like if the archetype performs actions that raise the stat that archetype is associated with, the overall AP granted by that action would receive a bonus as well as increasing the attunement level of the player with that archetype.
ReplyDeleteI can see the benefit of that until reaching the maximum Account Level at which any further AP gained is irrelevant for the "strength" of the agent.
Gerald Wolf Right, the AP thing would only be of value early on. the more I think about it...stats would be somewhat tricky - you can't award 10 uniques to a powered up agent who actually capped 9. That would cumulatively really screw things up over the long run if even things like KM walked were artificially boosted.
ReplyDeletePerhaps these could be bonuses that were attributed in even a different way: attack bonuses, recharge (defense) bonuses, xm boost and collection bonuses, inventory bonuses..
Chiplander ... action-radius-bonuses (for certain actions), item refunds (like bursters / us refunded that fail to hit resonators/portals)...
