The background of Obsidius' letter to Marcus is actually a bas-relief from the eastern stairway of the Apadana in ancient Persepolis. This was the awe-inspiring audience hall of Darius the Great, where tributes from the vast Achaemenian Persian Empire were presented to the king.

This section of the relief depicts Scythian (saka) tribute bearers. Could Obsidius have been to Persepolis?
