So I was finally able to acquire my very own copy of Ingress Origins.
So I was finally able to acquire my very own copy of Ingress Origins. I was so excited to read it and highly recommend that all investigators try and get their hands on a copy. I have resolved to work through each of Flint's questions in turn, and decided to start with one that seemed straightforward. After I started trying to pin down the answer, it proved to be surprisingly difficult. I am trying to ascertain which of the Niantic Researchers began as Enlightened. Flint hinted that there are five.
There is a section in the comic that deals with this, where Devra is discussing how some of the researchers are calling themselves the Enlightened and are embracing the creativity inspired by the xm. The others are apparently responding with increased mistrust and fear.
Given what we know and the names Devra lists, Roland Jarvis, enoch dalby, and Oliver Lynton-Wolfe are obvious members. It seems safe to add Hank Johnson at this point; although Devra doesn't mention him we know of his sympathies from other sources.
That leaves the final member of the Enlightened Five. Devra begins to say something about Carrie Campbell but is cut off by Ezekiel Calvin jumping in to imply that she and Dalby were more than complementary synesthetes, but lovers as well. We know from other sources, including H. Richard Loeb that Carrie is/was resistance even prior to the Resistance capturing a majority of her shards in London during Abaddon. Therefore, she could be the final member but I believe that enoch dalby and Carrie Campbell are an example of a special, cross-faction pairing. That leaves the others. We can rule out Misty Hannah and Kureze as they are listed as/appear very much Resistance in Tycho C.'s comic. Obviously Devra Bogdanovich is out as well. Martin Schubert appeared resolutely sceptical. The others don't leave much evidence either way in these early days. So, I have four "confirmed" Enlightened and four "confirmed" not.
Of those remaining, I personally feel that Yuri Alaric Nagassa is a good candidate for the final member of the initial Enlightened. He is a close friend of Hank Johnson for starters.
If it's not Yuri, then we are left with some possibilities that, if true would profoundly change our understanding of the early Niantic Project. Could it be Calvin? A Detection Algorithm? What about a sensitive who isn't a researcher like Hubert Farlowe (does he remind anyone else of Syphax?) Stein Lightman? I am interested to follow the lead of the Ingress investigation board and poll the community on this question. I am even more interested in hearing your reasons.

You can't rule out Carrie Campbell, as she was won by the resistance on operation Minotaur after the Niantic project finished.

On her conversation on origins, she seem more enlightened oriented, but all speculations for sure.
Jarvis rescued a Niantic agent from a kill team in a certain novel. Was that Farlowe?
ReplyDeleteAccording to the biocards, the 5th ENL researcher is Misty Hannah
ReplyDeleteRegarding Carrie Campbell, I was always under the impression she was Resistence aligned. This is referenced in the relationship with enoch dalby (known to be Enlightened originally) in so much as it is particularly productive due to them being differently aligned.
ReplyDeleteIf this relationship is considered with what we know now, could they be thought of as Vesuvian?
Richard Jennings, good point regarding Misty Hannah. However, Niantic Origins makes.clear that, at leat initially, Misty was decidedly in the non-Enlightened camp. I thought this was a bit strange as well seeing as I would have thought she had seemed to embrace her abilities. also her association with the green flash seemed interesting. However, at least initially, it seems she wasn't part of the original five.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading Origins :-)
ReplyDeleteLightman is known to have (originally) had Enlightened-leaning sympathies, until Persepolis.
ReplyDeleteBased on the recent intel release regarding Stein Lightman, he should be considered a possibility along with Yuri Alaric Nagassa.
ReplyDeleteI'd favour Yuri as I think Stein began to lean ENL after his extended work on the Lightman Decipherments which would place this after Cassandra hence not as part of the initial Niantic investigation
Oh wow, my question is still up for discussion. Pretty cool. Still trying to finish Origins. This is a nice reminder to do that this evening.
