    Ah!  Found it!!  Chapter 10 in The Alignment: Ingress by Thomas Greanias.

    The element is Tantalum.  It apparently reacts to Exotic matter...

    Axel Zabel Height was not stated.  However, they are still placed in the same octagonal pattern.  And I would presume placed no further than the modern standard of 40 meters away from the "Alter," as it was called.
