Glyphologic Analysis: Who are the Shapers?
(->Topic: Shapers, N'zeer - do they exist? Are they the same? Or different?)
Let's take a look back at the beginning of the Niantic Project, the information we were given about the research results from the CERN lab, the ordered data being sent from the portals. We were told that there are entities on the other side of the portals that want to influence our evolution, shape our path into the future through use of XM. Thus they were called the Shapers.
That is the basic information someone gets when he picks up the Ingress Scanner app for the first time and is asked to chose a side:
Enlightened: Support the accelarated human evolution by means of XM and help from the Shapers.
Resistance: Fight the Shaper influence, humans should evolve without XM.
All very simple and clear.
Is it?
Let's take three Glyphs: Human, Shapers and Improve. And turn them into a Glyph Sequence (GS).
If we go by the information provided above, the logical sequence would be: Shapers - Improve - Humans
For sure a GS with an Enlightened point of view, but one that would fit what we were told.
But what we get from the scanner is: Improve - Human - Shapers.
A simple explanation would be to put an "and" in between Human and Shapers, symbolizing a sort of symbiotic relationship that benefits both sides. Let's leave it at this for a second.
We do find this combination in a second GS:
Portal - Barrier - Defend - Human - Shapers
And yes, again putting an "and" between Human and Shapers would make sense. At least at first glance. But if the Portals are a barrier, and Humans and Shapers are supposed to be on different sides, how would they be able to defend both?
At this point we should ask ourselves who provided the original information about the Shapers? In short: it came from the Niantic Project, probably tailored to his own agenda by Ezekiel Calvin.
Going by what we learned during the Darsana and Shonin anomalies, there are entites on the other side of the portals. They are called the N'zeer, locked away on the other side of the portals by the group called 13Magnus who also tried to erase all knowledge about them. And there's the Anti-Magnus group, who secretly kept that knowledge alive and is now trying to bring back the N'zeer.
In the light of this knowledge I think it is save to assume that at least the N'zeer do exist - on the other side of the portals. And they seem to be opposed to the Shapers.
Going back to the 2nd GS and "and" would now make sense again, the portals being a barrier that protects both Humans and Shapers from the N'Zeer - if it weren't for the fact that both would have to be on this side to be protected from the N'Zeer.
Conclusions? Theories?
Maybe there is no spoon ... erm, no Shapers. Or the Shapers are beings that once were humans, but became something more through use of XM? Simulacra, or something similar to Roland Jarvis.
When the 13Magnus tried to follow/recreate the Osiris Myth, it is hard to imagine that they were successful right from the start. Some of their experiments with XM might have simply had no result at all, but some may also have had unexpected results. A test subject dosed heavily with XM and then killed near a portal - we just have to look at Jarvis to see what can come out of that. They could not be reborn, but maybe instead they found what they consider enlightenment?

The true meaning behind
Pursue - Path - Outside - Shapers - Lie
might not be to follow the resistance path (Shapers' lie = Shapers' false promise of human evolution through XM) but rather to see the lie we were told about the Shapers' existence, and follow a path of truth.
Avoid - Chaos - Avoid - Shapers - Lie
A lot of the chaos we experienced since Epiphany Night could indeed have been avoided if we had been more critical about what we were told about the so-called Shapers.

ReplyDeleteI also find it interesting that there are clearly enlightened/shaper sequences and resistance sequences (most obviously the : "help resistance/enlightened capture all portals")

ReplyDeleteMike Simpson I agree, the "faction specific" messages are a fascinating topic.
ReplyDeleteA very simple solution would be to consider OLW's and ADA's influence on/through the Scanner app and thinking about it as another way to influence people.
But looking at the randomnes of those messages and how they push in completely opposite directions, I don't believe that's the case. A manipulation would point toward a certain direction.
So where are those Glyph Sequences coming from? Two ideas:
(A) They are sent by sentient beings. Maybe by someone that does not know who is on the receiving end, but also does not care as long as portals are glpyh-hacked, thus producing a certain amount of portal activity?
Maybe that portal (network) activity creates a positive stimulus for them, like shots of endorphin. The better the glyph hack, the higher the stimulus for the "glophorphin addict" on the other side - and the higher the stimulus (reward) for the agent, who receives more items than on a normal hack.
(B) The portal network is serving also as some kind of data storage - we've seen that with Hank storing bits of memories in portals, the breadcrumbs we went hunting for. Glyph hackin is simply a random access to that data.
Why would there be requests like "Help X Capture All Portals"? Maybe they are just pieces of memories, emotions, desires that ended up stored in the portal network by Ingress agents "playing the game".
Their input got stored together with the other data. Which of course means that you have to be careful when considering Glyph Sequences as truth.
Could nzeer and shapers be the same? but with opposite intentions.
ReplyDeleteSame species? Same individual at different times? Different individuals with the same parent or even root identity? Both fictions created to hide a greater truth? Maybe.
ReplyDeleteSame species diferent ambitions. Maybe both hiding greater truth about them. And their intentions within their dimension. Some help us and some makes it worse for humanity. And of course the watchers, just recording within dimensions so higher councils make a better chance next time.
ReplyDeletejaime Rod. Yes, that is one possibility. They may be one species, with Shapers and N'zeer being something like the equivalent to our Enlightened and Resistance.
ReplyDeleteNever forget that ALL of this information comes THROUGH the scanners. The scanners were created by? The conflict, and sometimes co-operation, provide activity that is, no doubt, studied. The story, real or not, keeps us entertained while we perform the suggested tasks. The other information that seems to come from other than scanners, still comes through the same pipeline, one with many heads.

ReplyDeleteThe portals are all connected somehow, information entered I to the portal network can appear at all portals within the network as evident by media distribution and new weapon releases. Rather than shapers and humans being on different sides, we should consider the possibility that the other side of every portal is the same place, wherever the N'zeer were trapped. In essence, the only access between our universe and theirs are the portals. Do we have information about portals existing off planet?
