"Spend time at the portals" and "bask in the presence of XM"... this is what the Jarvis Entity's manifesto said was required for the Shapers to Pattern us. While we don't even know if time has any meaning on the other side, it's clear that on this plane at least, Patterning is not an instantaneous process.
One might imagine it to be akin to a long-exposure photograph; only objects that remain relatively motionless will be imaged in any detail.

I think you may be spot on with that connection. It feels right to me. The Shapers can't see us clearly or as individuals unless we "stop to smell the flowers," as it were.
