So another piece to add to the thoughts from Cupid's Span - in a way we have come full circle with the concepts of immortality that Edgar Allan Wright has mentioned before. I know everyone is saying this faction exists and that faction exists, wellllll I still just see three for now, green, blue and grey (no faction).
Jarvis/shapers - immortality through ordered data and digital patterns that may be able to find constructs if the 13Magnus can find the right combinations
Ada - immortality through digital AI programs downloading into biological bodies once the system bugs are worked out).
Thinking back - Devra's letter about all the good XM can do, and Klue's thoughts of an enlightened world and Oliver Lynton-Wolfe's description of XM in The Niantic Project: Ingress. All those pieces could be solved. answered, etc. by having constructs and immortality not of the body, but of the thing that is each of us.
Thinking about that - if you could choose, honestly and without force, which form of immortality would you choose, or would you choose not to take the immortality.
Yes lots of ifs, but still potential ifs :) And if this is a way things develop - then answering what are the pros and cons, side effects and so on for each method is probably driving a lot of research - not weapons, not energy, but immortality

The XM ghosts are immortal, but are not me. Knowing copies of myself live on is different from living on myself.
ReplyDeleteADA incursion may be able to replace body parts as they wear out, or duplicate some mental data in a digital format, but while the body lives on the self is diminished. We don't see much evidence of Klue remaining, only a node of ADA learning how to drive her body around.
Neither option really represents a route to individual immortality, but either or both would represent the possibility of great change for the human condition.
Devra's the 3rd party candidate of the ingress world. Kinda unsavory and mostly ignored.

ReplyDeleteJust remember that "transfer" of "consciousness" might not be as ideal as you might think.
ReplyDeleteCurrent scientific models show that while it's theoretically possible to create "transporters" to convert mass into energy, transmit that energy, and then reform the mass, that said mass needs to be "broken down" to the atomic level for that to happen.
i.e. you are disintegrated, and a "new you" with all of your memories, feelings, everything, appears elsewhere. To everyone else, it's you, but the self-aware you that is now, dies.
One has to wonder if that's also what happened to Jarvis - he actually did die, but a copy of him made it into the portals and then copied itself back into a corporeal form.
That was my main point, I don't want to lose my essence.
ReplyDeleteMike Wissinger At the moment, I think KlADA isn't even about immortality at all. It is so ADA can remove her physical boundaries and better understand the world as well as interact with it. There would be a different glyph sequence for immortality.

ReplyDeleteMichael Bramnik I agree with what you are saying, but to clarify your example I would like to postulate what I discussed with friends while at school 12 or so years ago.
ReplyDeleteTake star trek style teleporters, they apparently scan your whole body, deconstruct your body, then recreate it elsewhere. Energy concerns, etc aside, take it to the obvious conclusion, if there is a way to scan any lifeform in it's entirety, then recreate an exact copy of that lifeform elsewhere, then surely why stop at recreating in just one place?
If energy is of no concern, which obviously it wouldn't be, then you could teleporter and recreate countless copies of that scan any place you wanted.
Now of course this raises the question of soul, essence, ghost etc. If you are suddenly recreated in many places then where are you really and what are you? If your original was deconstructed to do this of course...
Slightly off topic but worth thinking about...
